  • Are You a Mac or PC?

    on Sat, 05/05/2012 - 11:16am

It's Spring 2007, my PC had become a dinosaur. I needed more desk space, more floor space and if possible, less wires. As I surfed the web (yes, we were still "surfing the web" in 2007!), I ventured upon the Apple site. I thought: "Should I dare look at the shiny objects displayed on this web site? But, I'm a true & tried PC user! Well...I do love my iPod Mini...hummmm..."

Days later I was setting up my new Mac Mini! This mighty computer took up less than 7 inches on my desk!!! I added a new HD monitor -- enabling me to watch TV in the lower right-hand corner whille working late at night; and even though I had not successfully reduced the wires since I was still using my PC keyboard and external speakers, I was happy!

Several years and a couple of laptops later, I'm a Mac. Yes, it's true. Once I joined the club, I never looked back. Mac all the way, business and personal. As a tribute to my PC days, I added Windows onto the Mac Mini using Bootcamp and Parallels, but I rarely access the operating system.

Am I like many Mac users? Well, based on the recent article PC vs Mac: Profile of a User [Infographic] by Grace O’Malley for Media Tapper, I don't really fit the classic Mac user category. However, I am a veggie, read Huffington Post & love my Macs!

  • Ivy League Face-Off: From Sports to Social Media

    on Fri, 05/04/2012 - 12:37pm

The Ivy League is near & dear to my heart, as I am a proud Cornellian! Yes, an member of the "high above Cayuga waters" clan. Although we take pride in our professors, such as Carl Sagan, Ivy Leaguers love their sports. Whether following the University of Pennsylvania Men's Basketball Team in the 1979 NCAA Final Four, wearing New York Knick's Jeremy Lin #17 jersey (a Harvard alum) or rooting for Women's Lacrosse standouts, Sarah Plumb of Dartmouth and Jessi Steinberg of Cornell, to receive the prestigious 2012 Tewaaraton Award, historically we can talk sports with the best of the Big Ten!

Now we're in the digital age & social media is another massive playing field. Colleges have forged the way, with the Ivy League playing a big part in the development of the interactive media and its continued reach. So needless to say, I was quite interested in the article Ivy League Facebook Face-Off [Infographic] by Michael van der Galien appearing on Media Tapper Magazine. See where your favorite Ivy ranks in the social media world, click here. And for those interested in following Ivy League Sports, click on the below pic.

  • Infographic: Reasons To Redesign Your Website

    on Tue, 05/01/2012 - 9:35am

Shows you how unique the thinking behind product design and identity is on the Internet compared with other forms of media. In some areas regular change no matter how small is thought to be an unwise move, that the audience craves regiment and you'll lose them if they can't ID you with a certain look and feel. Though straying too far from your original look still isn't recommended, even on the web, James has a good point. He gives us a number of reasons why you should keep your website looking design fresh and current.

Original post by, James Barraford appears on Media Tapper Magazine.

Website redesigning… an activity most of us compare to a trip to dentist. Just thinking about sitting for countless hours in front of the computer, maybe with books open learning code, can seem daunting.

WordPress has made the task somewhat easier, but it’s still very time intensive. The tweaking, the deleting and re-adding graphics, loving and then hating what the site is looking like is the common theme for website designers, and those periodically re-designing their sites. I look at it as a constant work in progress. (MORE)

  • Infographic: Search Gets Way Too Personal

    on Wed, 04/18/2012 - 8:19am

Original post by, Grace O'Malley appears on Media Tapper Magazine.

With the growth of the internet, finding information online is now simply a click of a button away. We’re being given more to look at while having easier access. But is the collecting of our search patterns and viewing sites going too far?In this infographic by MDG Advertising with data collected from Pew Research, it looks like I’m not the only one that thinks personal search capabilities are becoming a little bit too… personal!

“Despite search users reporting greater satisfaction with their search results, 65% are against personalized search for fear it would limit what results they see”

For me I don’t want my results skewed by past history. There are times I’m looking for something totally different depending on if I’m searching for work, for entertainment or simply because a question arose I’d like an answer to. (MORE)

  • Social Media And You: What Do You Stand For?

    on Wed, 04/11/2012 - 2:08pm

Original post by, Michael van der Galien appears on Media Tapper Magazine.

Guy Kawasaki and Mari Smith explain in an interview with Fox Business that social media and the Internet at large are quickly changing the way consumers interact with brands. One of the most important things to keep in mind, according to them?

Taking a stand. Smith and Kawasaki said business ethics and transparency are more important to consumers than ever before. They want to know what your company stands for, beyond the bottom line.

What I find most interesting about such remarks is that there appear to be a whole lot of people who believe that consumers didn’t care about such a thing a few years, let alone a few decades ago. It is, if we are to believe them, an entirely new development.

This isn’t true – at all. In the dark ages a blacksmith stood for more than ‘making a few bucks from the nobility’. If he was any good at his job, he was known as a man who delivered high quality products. His customers associated him with freedom and strength: freedom to ride a horse, the strength to strike down enemies with their sword.

“Standing for something beyond the bottom line” is nothing new. No business in the history of civilization could have existed if it didn’t serve a greater goal. (MORE)

  • Celebrating the Internet for 24 Hours On Google Plus

    on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 7:17am

On Friday, April 6, one man will set out on a 24-hour journey for the sixth time in as many years. He will not leave his house, but he will make an impact all over the world. He won’t be alone – his journey will be broadcast on a live hangout on Google+ and various other media. This man is Randy Resnick, and his journey is a 24-hour marathon celebrating the Internet and the good it can bring to the world.
For 24 hours starting at 09:00 CET (03:00 EST) he will be playing music, showing photography and art from the Google+ community and discussing Kiva.org, one of the true success stories of the Internet as a medium to do good.
With under a week to go I caught up with Randy to see how he’s feeling and to extract some more information out of him.

RMA: What can we expect when joining in or following on the live hangout?
RR: It’s like spinning the wheel of fortune, at any given time you might happen upon +Gina Trapani talking about what formed her personality, hear jazz guitarist +Rob Michael playing live or talking about playing on G+, or see one of the live sketch artists like +Cliff Roth drawing someone, or join a live international wine tasting, or maybe just seeing me pathetically falling asleep after 23 hours.
    RMA: Who can call in?
RR: Anyone can call in if they wish to talk about how the Internet makes the world a better place, Kiva.org being a prime example of this phenomenon. There is an audio mp3 stream if you just want to listen (works great on most phones) and of course the Hangout On Air to watch.
RMA: How can people call in?
There are numerous ways to join, they will be posted on the Plus Real Time page to those in the circle. They include audio via Skype, SIP, regular telephone via 48 local rate dial-in numbers (list of cities at http://bitly.com/VoxboneVUC ) and the mp3 feed. Of course people can also join in on the hangout on the +Plus Real Time page.
    RMA: Who benefits from it?
RR: Besides Kiva.org, I think Google Plus and those of us who believe in it might be well-served by this event if it works. The challenges involved in one individual doing this are considerable, but I’m not afraid to fail, I just hope I don’t! I’m a musician and we know that when we play in public, not everyone is listening.
I can only hope a few new people will join Kiva with a free $25 loan by visiting http://vuc.li/kiva2012 or hear some music or see the incredible work from a Google+ artist or photographer and get in the spirit. What if we all did something nice, one thing every day using these tools? (MORE)
